MJ Exhibition Opens Again!

Thanks to Nicoleta Ionescu I have had the honor of being featured in the Michael Jackson Exhibition on August 28, 2009, along with 50 other artists. Nicoleta has gathered 51 artists from around the world to participate in this exhibit. I was invited by Nicoleta to become a part of this wonderful exhibit to showcase artwork related to the late great Michael Jackson. So I submitted my Michael Jackson caricature that I had done in 2008.Click Here To See Starting today, Oct. 1, 2009, The exhibit is being hosted at the Politehnica University of Bucharest. Im very happy to be a part of the exhibits and be among some other great artists to celebrate Michael Jackson. The previous exhibit got a lot of exposure from the Romanian media as well as other media around the world.

Here is the finished G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary Storm Shadow action figure 3D model. It was modeled in Maya 8.5. I had a lot of fun with this model and very pleased with the end result. 3D Character Textures

Here are 2 characters that I worked on doing textures. On the character with the red shirt, I did the UV layout for the parts that I was going to texture. I just did simple textures and also modeled a collar for the shirt. (the character model and rig was done by another artist/free rig) On the character with the purple shirt I just modifed the texture. I changed the shirt color, hair color, added five o'clock shadow on his face and added driving gloves. (the character model,uv layout, and rig was done by another artist/gnomon)

Here is a model I am currently working on, Cobra Storm Shadow. I was inspired by the new 25th Anniversary G.I.JOE action figures that were released this year. I loved the cartoon back in the 80's and of course the action figures. This is my tribute to the great G.I.JOE series and toys. It is a work in progress. I am done with the base model and currently working on on UV mapping. I plan on taking it into mudbox for the detailing and of course texture.

Here is a weapon design I have been modeling in Maya. I wanted the main weapon to have multiple parts that could also be used as weapons on their own, if the main weapon no longer had ammo. The parts of the weapon are not only functional on their own but also work together as a whole. Here are some variations with the different pieces attatched. The gun consists of a double chamber revolver with blade end handle. It also has a sword up above and a knife below to be used for slicing. The knife below can also be used for hand support. They can each be removed and used seperately as well. The weapon also has a laser site and a telescope sight. It is a work in progress. I have to fix some geometry, do the uv layout and then on to texturing.

Castle Kronog

Many have tried and many have failed in their attempt to enter Castle Kronog. It is said that the owner of the castle still lives there but nobody has ever seen him. Nobody knows when the castle was built but stories of riches beyond anyones wildest dreams is said to be located deep within the castle. The few who have reached the outer edge have felt great fear/sickness and either returned home to die slowly or have fallen to their deaths. The castle was built on top of a mountain top and the foundation below has been weakened by the weather and by the ocean below. Some hike up near the mountain and imagine the treasure close within their grasp but are brought back to reality when they look down to see the countles bones scattered below.

Here are some underwater creatures I did as an exercise a few friends are doing at our new blog Creation Engines It is a blog that my buddy Nelson and I started to keep up with our drawing, painting, and creativity skills. The exercise can be done in any style, genre, media, and level of finish. The main thing is to have fun and that is exactly what I had when I did these underwater creatures.

Shadow Puppeteers

Here are my Shadow Puppeteers: Father and Son. They both work together traveling around entertaining the towns. The father, on the left, is an expert puppeteer and cares a lot about his craft/profession. He holds a shadow puppet with great care. He wants to pass down the skills to his only son. On the right is his son. His son means well but is clumsy, lazy, and goofy. He holds his shadow puppet the incorrect way and breaks it. He also wears a picture of his mother on his head wrap in her memory. In the middle is the Beast of Burden, Buddy. He is loyal and grew up with the shadow puppeteer family. He likes to have fun but can sometimes get into trouble too. He sometimes doesn't have patience for the shadow puppeteer's son and hates it when he sleeps on his back and drools (As seen in the story beat below) A smaller story beat depicts Buddy and the son knocking over the cart and getting yelled at by the shadow puppetmaster.

Ghost Hunters: Character Designs

Here are my character designs for a Ghost Hunter team set in Paris during the Victorian era that I have been working on for the past weeks. At the top is the leader of the group named Rick Nightengale. He is ready for battle using his ghost hunting gun which enables him to shoot out a goo that can temporarily matterialize the ghosts and make them catchable. He can also set the gun to kill if necassary. Then there is Prof. Nicholas Frost who invents the team's ghost hunting equipment. He uses a vacuum type gun that is used to capture ghosts in various bottle sizes. He always carries his tool kit with him and has many pockets to store the ghosts. He also has a huge ghost container on his back for larger more evil ghosts. Then there is Francine Bruneau, she is tough and shoots to kill. She is dressed in Victorian clothing. She has a larger gun and is connected to more powerful goo. She can stun the ghosts but is able to kill them quickly. Finally, there is Iva Nara, she is blind but able to see ghosts. She helps in guiding the team to find evil ghosts. She is wearing clothing that covers her up and protects her because she is afraid of ghosts. The clothing has Japanese writing in gold that translates to, "Sacred, evil ghosts don't hurt me". This message is written on her fan and her umbrella/cane. The Japanese writing in gold, fan, umbrella, and amulets help in keeping her safe.

Speed Paints 01 (20min)

Here are all three 20 minute speed paints along with the refrence. I have to say that the 20 minute deadline really tested me. It forced me to block in everything quicker than I would have on the 30 minute Spider-man speed paints. I also have to say that practicing with the 30 minute speed paints also helped in adjusting to the shorter time. I had a lot of fun with them but they were really challenging.

Here is a one hour speed paint. I originally stopped at 30 minutes but it didn't have the webbing just like the previous speed paint. I really wanted to include the web design in at least one of the Spider-man speed paints. So I used the extra 30 minutes to add the webbing. I stayed with the classic Spider-man look and just had the black lines for web design.

Here is another 30 minute speed paint. I am keeping with the Spider-man 3 theme because it inspires me. I didn't get as far as I would have liked but I think it is a good start. If I had another half hour I would double check proportions and shapes. I would have also put in the webbing design on his suit. I am hoping I will do well in the 20 minute speed paints coming up soon.

Here is another 30 minute speed paint. I looked at this one at the 20 minute mark and it looked really rough. The extra ten minutes make a huge difference in getting those last minute details. Hope to get quicker but I am having fun with 30 min speed paints.

Here is speed paint number 6. It is the last speed paint for the week. This was the toughest one of all. At first glance I just saw a bunch of detail and didn't know where to begin. But I began to block in the big shapes and then went on to focus what I believed was more important which was the face. Just like the clouds of speed paint 5, the bulk of the hour was spent on trying to get the face right. I then moved on to continue blocking in more of the background. I couldn't get into the details as I would have like but I think it is a good start for an hour. (Bottom image is the refrence picture)

Here is speed paint number five and the second one for this week. Man, this one was tough. I worked in 3 layers. The first layer I worked on was on the clouds. I think clouds are really difficult to get down correctly and I spent a good chunk of the hour trying to get it right. But I had to move on so I then worked on the water on another layer and the boats and shack on another layer. The hour went by very quickly and I couldn't get into the details as I would have liked. Here is speed paint numero quatro (number four). Just when I started to get into the details the hour limit was up. I had a lot of fun on this one. I worked on several layers for this one just to speed things up. I worked on the sky on one layer, did the foreground elements and posts on another and did the water on another layer. Model Set: High Mountain Shrine

Here is one of the projects I have been working on given by my teacher Barron Storey. Were were supposed to make an environment piece from our own story. I decided to make a high mountain shrine that plays an important role in my story and characters. The idea was to build the environment and play with the lighting using flashlights all while thinking about focal points. We were also supposed to think of the model set as theatre stage sets. We had to think about where the characters would walk around and interact. We were also supposed to use these sets as refrence for our drawings and put our characters in the environment. I built my set out of found objects. I used a cardboard box foundation to begin. I then used foam board, tape, paper bags, newspaper, paper mache, and then painted with acrylic paints. This was a lot of fun and helpful. Here I have pictures of the model set as well as thumbnail drawings of the initial concept of what i wanted the set to look like.

Here is the third speed paint of the week. The hour went by so fast on this one. This was also the most challenging. I blocked in the big shapes and then went in to smaller shapes. I worked by having the background on one layer and the characters on a seperate layer. This was a lot of fun. Can't wait for the next one.

This is my first speed paint for the week. We are supposed to paint these from photo refrence. It was done in photoshop using a wacom tablet and worked on for one hour. We could not work under or over an hour. Our BFA teacher Dela Longfish assigned three for this week. I recommend it if you haven't tried it. It will train your eye, increase speed, and develop photoshop painting skills. I tried to get as far as I could before the hour ended. I began with the background color and then blocked in the big shapes. I worked trying to match the color, values, soft and hard edges. It was a lot of fun. Hope to do better next time. WonderCon

I went to WonderCon this past weekend and had a great time. It is a place that has many things I love all in one place. Comics, animation, movies, art, artists, action figures, books, friends, and the list goes on and on. I was able to go with my good friend Nelson, seen standing in front of some S.F. buildings, and later with my cousin Saul. My cousin and I also ran into some great friends and enjoyed the amazing art and artists at WonderCon. Here we all are enjoying lunch at the Metreon in S.F. Brad Bird and Patton Oswalt's presentation for, Pixar's next film, Ratatouille was unforgettable. Some of the other movies showcased were Spider-man 3, Ninja Turtles, Surf's Up, and 300 to name a few. Also Marvel and DC have some big plans for this year and it is looking awesome so far. It is going to be a great year overall for films and comics. I was also lucky to meet and talk with some artists that have inspired me. Here is a picture of Patrick Morgan (Whale Boy), Ed Acosta, and Jose Lopez (Mariachi Samurai) at their booth. Some of the nicest people I have met. It all went by so fast. Can't wait for the next WonderCon.

Here are some old waterfall and tree drawings from my sketchbook. The tree on the left is one of the ever famous San Jose State "Cancer" trees. It is called that because of the growths on the tree bark. The other tree drawings were from Bonfante Gardens. There are some great "Circus" trees with amazing designs that are worth checking out and the gardens are beautiful.

This is a 3D model I did this past semester. I modeled and unwrapped the UVs for now but plan on texturing it soon. I began texturing but I got some great advice from Craig Voigt, who worked on the animated feature Barnyard, to not be limited by one UV map. The reason is by having more UV maps you can have more resolution/detail on the textures. He gave this advice with the past two models I posted and I plan on making those changes to my future models.

Here is an inked version and a painted version of my eagle using photoshop and painter. I started off using painter and then took it into photoshop. I know it needs some work particularly in the feathers. This was one of my first attempts at painting with my new wacom tablet in photoshop and painter.
